A Summary of the Nile Basin Initiative Various Projects

First: the Joint Vision Program Projects

1-  The Project of Planning and Management of Water Resources

Project Objectives

Support the technical cadres laying an integrated and fair system for supporting the development, management and protection of the Nile Basin water resources. 

Desired Outcomes

- Strengthen the national potentialities and putting an executive policy for the optimal use of water.

- Prepare and manage the joint project successively.

- Establish a decision maker support system for the planning and management of water at the national and regional levels.

- Equip decision maker system with a means enabling it to maximize the project objectives.

 

2-  The Transboundary Environment Project

Project Objectives

•  Establish a strategic framework for environmental development of the Nile Basin and sustain environmental interaction across the borders among the Nile Basin states according to the Nile Basin Initiative' Strategic Program.

•  Strengthen transboundary environmental achievements at the level of the River Nile in the framework of the Initiative's strategic program.

Desired Outcomes

  • Improve cooperation of transboundary environment and water sources management.
  • Establish a decision maker support system.
  • Conserve water and forests.
  • Raising the society's awareness through media and education.
  • Improve the wetlands management.
  • Laying down some standard criteria for water quality and controlling pollution focuses affecting transboundary environment.

 

3-  The Applied Training Project

Project Objectives

  • Raise institutional and human capacities in some fields of water sources management in the governmental and private sectors.
  • Establish or support centers that would set regular training programs.
  • Expand areas of exchange among water specialists at the basin level.

 

Desired Outcomes

  • Create an educational network.
  • Educate the chiefs with decision making support systems and support human resources in management of water sources.
  • Raise the efficiency of the technicians, specialists and experts in the fields of water.
  • Promote exchange of expertise in the basin.

4-  The Project of the Optimal Use of Water in Agricultural Production

Project Objectives

  • Set practical rules for the optimal use of water in cultivation and arrange a forum for supporting beneficiaries at national and regional levels.

Desired Outcomes

  • Improve management of agriculture processes and increase of production.
  • Develop irrigation processes to suit every area.
  • Select some pilot projects in various areas of the basin to improve performance of agricultural and irrigation processes.

5-  The Project of Confidence-building and Participation of Beneficiaries

Project Objectives

  • Build confidence at national and regional levels and involving beneficiaries in all the Initiative's projects under the umbrella of the Nile Basin Initiative.

 

Desired Outcomes

  • Promote the Nile Basin Initiative in the Nile Basin states and the rest of the world through media.
  • Enhance information capacity in the Nile Basin countries.
  • Establish an information unit at the Secretariat in Entebbe to facilitate dialogue with beneficiaries and provide advice for their participation.

6-  The Project of Economic and Social Development and Participation in Utilities

Project Objectives

The project aims to build a network of professionals in the fields of economic planning, specialized research institutions, technical experts from the public and private sectors, academicians, sociologists and participants from the civil society in the Nile Basin countries to explore the available alternatives and scenarios of the participation plans in the utilities, means of integration and coordination in the economic and social fields.

Desired Outcomes

  • Encourage participation of the private sector to maximize the investments and remove obstacles facing regional cooperation.
  • Evaluate the human capacity in economic fields - analysis of policies and planning.
  • Establish a system for activities of the joint vision projects to monitor work progress from all aspects.
  • Establish a network of professionals and experts in the field of social and economic cooperation within the Basin states.
  • Determine the benefits and available growth opportunities through regional cooperation.
  • Identify the principles and actions necessary for utilization of resources.
  • Form fora at national and regional levels.

7- The Project of Regional Power Exchange

Project Objectives

Provision of different means for coordination among the Nile Basin countries to form a regional market for energy.

 

Desired Outcomes

  • Formation of the Group of Electrical Energy of the Nile Basin countries.
  • Providing the Group of Multi-purpose Management of the River Nile Basin Resources with the long-term plan of electrical energy projects.

8- The Project of Coordination

Project Objectives

  • Develop capacity of the Nile Basin Initiative Secretariat in implementing the projects at the level of different programs in the Basin.
  • Stress the efficiency of supervision and coordination between the Joint Vision Program Projects.

Desired Outcomes

  • Activation of coordination between activities of the Joint Vision Program Projects.

9-  Irrigation and Drainage Project

  Project Objectives

  • Increase of the areas cultivated by irrigation and improve agricultural production by sound water use.

  Desired Outcomes

  • Irrigation water pumping station in the basin of Anjar Dedasa and studying the Hemera area and Tana Lake area.
  • Establish and sustain agricultural organizations.
  • Regional cooperation to exchange expertise among the Eastern Nile Basin countries.

10- The Planning Model Project

Project Objectives

  • Support decision makers in selecting alternatives for the projects and determining their effects and benefits.

Desired Outcomes

  • Develop human skills.
  • Design a mathematical model with a possibility of developing.
  • Apply and support use of model.

11-The Baro-Acobo Project

Project Objectives

  • Save 12 billion m 3 that are wasted in the swamps.
  • Increase agricultural productivity through irrigation.
  • Improve the standard of the living and increase the individual's income by providing job opportunities.

Desired Outcomes

  • Proper management of lands and improve irrigation methods.
  • Utilization of electro hydraulic power.
  • Improve navigation.
  • Training, economic and social development.

12- The Basins Management Project

Project Objectives

  • Improve the standard of living and increase the individual's income by providing job opportunities.
  • Achieve regional cooperation.
  • Decrease the amount of silt in reservoirs.

Desired Outcomes

  • Study of the Basin of Baro and Subat Rivers.
  • Study of the Basin of Atbara, Blue Nile and Main Nile.
  • Study of the Erosion and Sedimentation Rate.
  • Assessment of regional cooperation to evaluate the benefits of this cooperation.

13- The Project of Investment of Power Trade for the Eastern Nile

Project Objectives

  • National and regional development through provision of electricity with a less price.
  • Achieve cooperation between countries.
  • Providing clean power sources.

Desired Outcomes

  • Feasibility study for 3 hydroelectric projects in the Blue Nile in Ethiopia.
  • Feasibility study for one project on the Blue Nile in Sudan.
  • Feasibility study for one project on Baro River in Ethiopia.
  • Unification of the process of information input in the model.

14-  The Project of Electric Connection between Ethiopia and Sudan

Project Objectives

  • Electric Connection between Ethiopia and Sudan for power exchange .

Desired Outcomes

  • Update the feasibility study prepared in 1988 and updated in 1995.
  • Study the Project's social and environmental effects.
  • Establish high voltage line connecting Ethiopia and Sudan with a length of 428 K.M. and a 230 volt capacity.
  • Coordinate the process of power exchange.

15-  Flood Monitoring and Early Alarm Project

Project Objectives

  • Flood forecast and early alarm to alleviate the flood impacts.
  • Cooperation between the three countries in the field of flood monitoring.

Desired Outcomes

  • Build human skills and capacities.
  • Establish a regional component for coordination between forecast centers and exchange of expertise.

16-  The Multi-purpose Development Program Project

Project Objectives

  • Strengthen full cooperation among states.
  • Improve living conditions through economic growth.
  • Environment conservation.

Desired Outcomes

  • Build human skills and capacity.
  • Establish a regional database for all the major river basins of the Eastern Nile.
  • Awareness of the environmental, social and water issues.
