Rainfed Agriculture in the Arab Republic of Egypt

 

Rainfed agriculture in the Egyptian north coasts constitutes an important part of the existent economic activities like tourism and oil. Approximately 300 thousand native inhabitants work in rainfed agriculture in addition to newcomers who depend highly on rainfed agricultural products. It was important to shed light on rainfed agriculture in Egypt , modern prevalent systems, techniques and applications. We shall tackle this activity in this paper which includes the following parts:

- Water sources in Egypt (resources and needs).

- Agricultural activities in Egyptian coasts.

- Common local systems for harvesting rainfall water.

•  Storing rainfall water in the soil sector.

•  Storing rainfall water in reservoirs.

•  Use of accumulated rainfall under the surface.

-  Modern applications for increasing efficiency of rainfall water use.

•  Use of meteorological data.

•  Modern systems of rainwater harvesting.

•  Use of new and renewable energy.

•  Crop practices.

•  Integrated development of agricultural activities.

•  Planting nurseries for trees and bushes using solar houses and fog irrigation.

•  Technology of use of supplementary fodders for small animals.
